CONTEST GUIDE

PURPOSE

The purpose of this contest is to recognize and encourage talented young musicians by providing a competition setting to showcase outstanding performance and encourage pursuit of further music study. This competition is open to pianists, singers and instrumentalists.

ELIGIBILITY

This is a grade level contest and is open to students in 9th through 12th grade, or maximum age 18 (age determined as of March 10th).  Students must enter at their grade level (cannot enter above or below grade level).

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Once repertoire lists have been submitted no omissions or substitutions are allowed.
  2. The program is at the discretion of the entrant, but MUST include at least two pieces from different style periods. If more than two pieces, it must be within the time limit. One piece MUST be from the Baroque or Classical periods.
  3. Questions about the suitability of repertoire should be addressed to the Repertoire Committee.
  4. Pieces using unconventional performance techniques, such as plucking, hitting, or strumming the strings inside the piano; tapping on the case or soundboard with knuckles or other object, etc. must be approved by the Student Events Chair prior to registration, as this depends on what the facility allows.
  5. Compositions for prepared piano, i.e. that involve the use of foreign objects attached to the strings or other parts of the action, are not allowed due to contract limitations with facilities.
  6. Concerto Performances are not permitted.
  7. Singers and Instrumentalists may consult the UIL Class I Solo list.
  8. No changes or additions to the submitted repertoire are allowed.
  9. The allowed performance time is 15 minutes for 9th-10th graders and 20 minutes for 11th-12th graders.
  10. A program may exceed this length but the performer will be stopped without penalization
  11. Student chooses order of the pieces performed. Repeats are left to the discretion of entrant.
  12. Music must be memorized.

AT THE CONTEST

  1. Students must provide original music for the judge or they will automatically be disqualified.
  2. Number the first measure of each new line of the music.
  3. All pieces MUST be memorized.
  4. The schedule is randomized for each grade level contest, so requests for time changes are not accepted.
  5. If a contestant cannot attend, the chair should be notified in advance.
  6. If any division or grade level of a contest has five or fewer entries, the judge may (but is not obliged to) withhold one or more possible awards. However, the total number of awards cannot exceed the number of contestants.
  7. Judges may declare there is no winner and the decision of the judges is final.
  8. The contest is an open event allowing an audience.

WINNERS

  1.  Cash awards will be given to first and second place. Honorable mentions may be awarded at the discretion of the judges. No ties are permitted for cash prizes.
